Shopping for a Shopping Cart
October 14, 2007
When you are ready to start shopping for e-commerce shopping carts and hosting there are a lot of things you need to know. Here are a few tried and true methods that work when shopping for a shopping cart!
1. Storefront
It;s got to have a design factor. You have to be able through templates or skins or whatever they call it, to customize your storefront. Back end admin does not matter to me but if my front page looks like every other front page that is running the same software then how can I distinguished my site from the others?
2. Support
Shopping cart systems aside, how will your hosting provider support you and your application? You will be surprised how many hosting companies offer little to no support on general issues that might come about when installing a script. Get the facts before going forward. You may need to switch hosting providers if you find that support is an issue.
3. Customer experience
Make sure the system you choose is not clunky and will provide a smooth experience from the customer perspective. Think of what annoys you when shopping online and make sure you don’t do it.
4. Keep it professional
You have to keep it professional if you want to add credibility to your site. I would not buy from someones site if it looks like it was put together with a cheap web design software. AND STAY AWAY FROM BACKGROUND MUSIC FILES!!! This is a pet peeve of mine. I can’t stand when I go to a web page and someone has a music file embedded. Keep the graphics simple, keep the colors plain and easily readable. Look at a large e-commerce site and develop your look around what is working for them.
Shopping for e-commerce package/hosting requires you know what you are looking for and also what you need. As long as you choose an experienced host, template driven systems, and easy navigation and configuration, then you will have the first makings of a great e-commerce site.
