LCD and Plasma TV’s Found to be Highly Reliable
December 10, 2007
Consumer Reports released a report which claims that LCD and Plasma TV’s require very few repairs within the first 3 years. Consumers who buy the extended warranties on Plasma or LCD TV’s this year will be wasting their money. It’s very unlikely that anything will happen within the first three years! Thats great news for people who are about to purchase these items for Christmas gifts.
LCD and Plasma TV’s have a 3% repair rate according to Consumer Reports Annual Product Reliability Survey for December. On the other hand, Rear-projection TV’s were found to have a much higher repair rate than LCD or Plasma TV’s.
Panasonic’s 50-inch TH-50PZ700U Plasma TV was named Consumer Reports’ best flat-panel TV ever tested. Overall, Panasonic flat-panel TV’s had a 2% repair rate.
Among those that required repair, the average cost was $264 on LCD TV’s and $395 on Plasma TV’s.
If you insist on buying the extended warranty on your new LCD or Plasma TV make sure it is no more that 15% of the total cost of the TV. Some retailers push you to buy this but remember the average price for a repair would be much less in some cases than the extended warranty.
Flat panel high definition TV’s were at the top of most peoples wish lists this Christmas. It was closely followed by a Windows based notebook computer and a digital camera.
Remember, before buying a big ticket item like a TV, read reviews online first. Just because the sales person says it is a good TV does not really mean it is.

Palm TX Handheld PDA
December 7, 2007

What? These things are still around? Yes. Apparently even with all of phones out there with the same capabilities as a PDA, Palm still thinks there is a market for the TX. And you know what, there is!
Palm has always had great PDA’s in my opinion. I have always liked their OS over the rest. It’s easier for me to navigate probably because Palm was the first PDA I ever owned.
Now, having a PDA is almost like having a fanny pack. People laugh at you. No, just kidding, but they are becoming very rare.
Think about it. With all of the phones with PDA’s built in, it’s less clunky and more economical to buy something like a Treo.
Now this Palm does have wireless, video playing capability and such but it does not have a hard drive. It only supports SD cards. This just stinks! It would be so much better if a hard drive was included.
Conclusion
If you are a die hard fan of Palm and just have to have a PDA then by all means, this is a great PDA. But, if you are looking for a cool video player/MP3 player then I would go with something like the iPod Touch. It’s a lot better for playing media. It’s not clunky. It’s not slow. The Palm TX is nice for an organizer but that would be where it’s usefulness starts to fade.

Christmas Gift 2007 Online Shopping Guide
December 4, 2007
It’s not easy searching through the flyers that come in the paper trying to find a good deal. But, reality is that that company had to spend money to print that ad and put it in the paper. It’s all cost to that company and they are going to try to recuperate that cost. How? Buy marking up their products of course. Thats the nature of business.
Here is a trick. Although shopping online can be a pain at times. You know, like waiting for packages and signing for things, in reality, you can save a lot of money if you do it right. Buying from large stores is good for security and ease of returns but you usually pay a higher price unless they are trying to clear their inventory.
You see, these companies can buy in large bulk amounts and get great discounts on products. For instance, a DVD player you might pay $199 for they get for $79 dollars. But, they have to pay bills, employees, advertisements like the flyer in the newspaper. All of these things add up. Although they say they bring the savings to you, in reality they have a high markup for their products and they have to just to stay in business.
So, how do I do my shopping online? I use many different methods. I like to use price comparison sites to find products that I know I want to buy and use review and price comparison sites like this site, to research products before I buy. That way, I know what I am getting before I purchase it and I am finding the best possible price without having to search all over the internet myself.
Another good tool, if you have not used is is Froogle. Froogle is a product of, you guessed it, Google and it offers a shopping comparison so to speak. Be careful with Froogle though. Anyone can post a Froogle ad. It’s like ebay but your credit card number goes to the person not to paypal. It’s more risky because you don’t know who is on the other end of that transaction and they could easily be a crook. So, make sure they have high reviews or they are a known name in the industry.
When we do our price comparison we only use “trusted” merchants because we don’t want you to worry about identity theft or getting robbed from your hard earned money.
Our trusted merchants have been around for many years, are well established in the industry and have physical store addresses. That way, we know their track record, we know how they perform in the industry and if we bought a high ticket item, worst case we can go knock on their door and get our money back. You should never have to worry about that with the merchants we list however because they are legit, large businesses.
Amazon is another place that is usually very cheap and you get your products quickly. However, when shopping on Amazon make sure you buy from Amazon. They do have options to buy from other merchants and Amazon has a market place like eBay where almost anyone can post something for sale.
Usually you will find a “buy new” section and a “buy used” section. If you click on these you will be taken to a list of merchants. If you simply add it to cart from the product page, unless otherwise stated on their page, you are purchasing from Amazon. They will state what merchant is selling the product if it is not from Amazon.
Another great tool is eBay. However, BE CAREFUL. The reason I say that is because, especially in the Holiday season, crooks are everywhere. People often will post an ad for a product that they don’t actually have. Their distributor may have it but they don’t have it in their possession. This can cause problems if their distributor runs out by the end of the auction. Make sure they have it in stock or you may find it a bit empty under the Christmas tree this year.
Well, hopefully this will help you and give you some ideas on where to look for your Christmas shopping adventure this year. It’s always an adventure. Oh, and if you are looking for ideas for a man, we have a list of the Top 10 Christmas Gifts for Men for 2007. Check it out. It may be helpful.

Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS 8.0MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review and Price Guide
December 2, 2007
For those familiar with the Cannon Powershot S3 IS series, this camera will seem very familiar. Most of the things that made the S3 IS a huge hit remain the same or have improved in the S5 IS.
For instance the image stabilization technology remains, the huge array of manual and semimanual controls and the the signature flip-and-twist LCD screen have all been brought forward to this new version.
All new features include a bump up to 8 megapixels from the S3 IS models 6-megapixel capability, a wider LCD screen, face recognition, auto focus, auto exposure, Digic III processor and a maximum of ISO 1600.
This camera has many bells and whistles but remains very easy to operate. Your hands will find a memory to the controls very quickly and operation the S5 IS will become almost second nature.
With the max resolution being 3264 x 1832, makes this the best super zoom on the market. The only drawbacks we found were that, just like the S3, it still does not have RAW file mode and there are some slight artifacts.
Conclusion
The S5 IS brings the S3 up to where it should be. With some needed upgrades you now have a camera capable of competing with the rest and able to meet the high demands that photographers put them under. This camera, while it still has it’s flaws, is the best super zoom on the market in our opinion and is a good solid camera that will last you for years to come.
