Kindle: Amazon’s New Wireless Reading Device Review
April 28, 2008
Amazon recently introduced the Kindle. I thought it would be just another cheap gadget that people would buy only to let it sit on their shelves. Well, since it’s release, I have seen it grow in popularity. I has quite a fan base now. So, I had to see what all the fuss was about.
The Amazon Kindle is a reading device which allows you to read electronic documents without having to pull out the laptop. The display is specifically designed to imitate paper and to give you a crisp, sharp background to make it easier on your eyes when reading for long periods of time.
One of the best features of the Kindle is that it is a wireless reading device. That means you don’t have to mess around with network cables or syncing up to a PC. The best part is that is does NOT use Wifi. It uses the same technology as most cell phones so you don’t have to search for a signal. Wherever your cell phone works so will your Kindle.
You have many choices regarding what to read. Currently there are more that 110,000 books available and growing. Also, the Kindle downloads the newest posts from the world top 300 blogs so you can stay up to date with your favorite blog. It will also downloads the top US newspapers for free everyday. You never need a paper subscription again! Also, it will hold up to 200 books so you don’t have to make room for a new download. You can simply store them all together on the Kindle.
So, by now you might be thinking whats the catch with this thing. There must be a service charge for the wireless access or a monthly subscription fee right? Wrong. There is no monthly charge or subscription fee. Nothing! Thats the coolest part!
One of my favorite things about the Kindle is the long battery life. They claim you can charge it every other day but during high use I think it would be better to charge it everyday. Also, you can turn the wireless network off and extend the battery life and just turn it back on for a few minutes so that it can get it’s updates.
The Kindle is well put together. It’s lighter than a paperback book somehow. It weighs only 10.3 ounces! It’s very durable for something so light and should last you many years if you are not rough with it.
So enough of my ramblings. I like it. It’s not like reading a computer screen, it’s just like reading a piece of paper except easier on the eyes. It has an ever increasing selection of titles. It is light with very long battery life and the best part is, I never have to worry about getting my newspaper from the front lawn again! I think you will be very surprised what the Kindle has to offer. Everyone that I know falls in love with this thing from the first moment they use it. So, if you are interested you might want to hurry. They can’t keep these things in stock. Click on the link below to go directly to Amazons Kindle page.
