Canon PowerShot Pro Series S5 IS 8.0MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom Review and Price Guide

December 2, 2007

For those familiar with the Cannon Powershot S3 IS series, this camera will seem very familiar. Most of the things that made the S3 IS a huge hit remain the same or have improved in the S5 IS.

For instance the image stabilization technology remains, the huge array of manual and semimanual controls and the the signature flip-and-twist LCD screen have all been brought forward to this new version.

All new features include a bump up to 8 megapixels from the S3 IS models 6-megapixel capability, a wider LCD screen, face recognition, auto focus, auto exposure, Digic III processor and a maximum of ISO 1600.

This camera has many bells and whistles but remains very easy to operate. Your hands will find a memory to the controls very quickly and operation the S5 IS will become almost second nature.

With the max resolution being 3264 x 1832, makes this the best super zoom on the market. The only drawbacks we found were that, just like the S3, it still does not have RAW file mode and there are some slight artifacts.

Conclusion

The S5 IS brings the S3 up to where it should be. With some needed upgrades you now have a camera capable of competing with the rest and able to meet the high demands that photographers put them under. This camera, while it still has it’s flaws, is the best super zoom on the market in our opinion and is a good solid camera that will last you for years to come.
